Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital receives over $662,000 from its Foundation

On Thursday, June 13, the Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation presented Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre with a cheque for $662,040.74 for the hospital’s 2018-2019 equipment and programming needs.  The presentation was made at the Foundation’s annual Pasta Dinner and donor recognition event which saw over 430 staff, patients, volunteers and community members.  

Funds were generated through partnerships with service clubs, community groups and associations across Niagara, third-party fundraisers, major corporate and private donations, and yearly events the Foundation hosts.  Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation is responsible for fundraising for all necessary patient related equipment needs, upgrading patient care areas, and funding two specialty programs run at the hospital.

“The success of the Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation is not only its donors and supporters but the hands on staff at the hospital,” says Norma Medulun Burke, Board Chair of the HDS Foundation. “We are fortune to fundraise for an organization that is committed to providing healthcare with the utmost respect, dignity, and care to its patients.”

Through this funding, Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital has purchased priority patient care equipment such as electric beds, air mattresses, a hand therapy machine, replaced plynths, repaired operating pieces to the therapy pool, voice amplification hardware, ceiling lifts, vital signs monitors and fund both the Steve Ludzik Parkinson’s Rehab Centre and the new Rankin Family Cancer Rehab Program. In addition, palliative care rooms have been refurbished and given new life.

The Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation made an additional announcement that as a result of the overwhelming need for the Parkinson’s program, the Foundation is dedicating an additional $135,000 to the 2019-2020 year to help decrease the wait list of the program. 

“After learning that the Parkinson’s Program was at a staggering year and half wait list for new patients, the Foundation Board of Directors felt it their duty to assist and shorten the wait time for those suffering with the disease,” continues Medulun Burke. “In addition to this, the Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation Board and staff will begin working more closely with the Steve Ludzik Foundation in actively fundraising for the Parkinson’s Program to further assist them in meeting the demanding needs of our community.”

The 2018-2019 donation was used to:

purchase 78 pieces of priority patient care equipment.
congratulate 62 Parkinson’s Rehab graduates from the Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson’s Rehab.
congratulate 29 patients graduates the NEW Rankin Family Cancer Rehab Program.
renovate palliative care rooms.
provide cable television to those in palliative care rooms.
provide $31,798 in staff education to improve patient outcomes and encourage staff to stay informed of impending changes to healthcare.
